La Paz sits on the Gulf of California, which Cousteau called the aquarium of the world and which turns out to have been an understatement.

Whale sharks feed in the bay from autumn to spring, grey whales calve in the lagoons up the Pacific side from January, and Espíritu Santo — a World Heritage island of red rock and sea lions — is an hour out. Balandra's mushroom rock is the postcard.

    Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, Baja California Sur

    The cathedral of La Paz in Baja California Sur, built on the site of the Jesuit mission of 1720 that gave the town its start. Its twin towers face the main square a block from the seafront promenade.

    Misión de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de La Paz Airapí

    A mission founded on the site of present-day La Paz in 1720 by the Jesuits Juan de Ugarte and Jaime Bravo. It was the first point of Spanish presence in Baja California, and clashes with the Guaycura and Pericú were frequent.
