Lanzhou is strung out along the Yellow River, the first big city the river passes through, and is where beef noodles were invented — pulled to order, in any of a dozen thicknesses, eaten for breakfast.

The iron bridge of 1909 was the first permanent crossing of the river anywhere. Boats run upstream to the Bingling cave temples. This is the start of the Hexi Corridor, with the striped hills of Zhangye Danxia a few hours west.

    Xiguan Mosque

    The largest mosque in Lanzhou, rebuilt in the 1980s in a domed Central Asian manner rather than the Chinese pavilion style of older Gansu mosques. It serves the Hui community of a city that has been a Muslim centre on the Yellow River for centuries.

    Gansu Provincial Museum

    The provincial museum of Gansu at Lanzhou. It holds more than 350,000 objects split between history and natural science, has staged nearly three hundred exhibitions since opening, and has sent its collection abroad on tour.

    Wuquan Mountain

    A wooded hill on the southern edge of Lanzhou, named for the five springs that rise on it. Temples from the Yuan and Ming climb its slope, and a Han general is said to have struck the springs from the rock.

    Liujiaxia Reservoir

    A reservoir formed by the Liujiaxia dam on the Yellow River in Gansu. It covers more than 130 square kilometres and lies entirely within the Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture.
