Longyearbyen is at seventy-eight degrees north, the northernmost town of any size on earth. Polar bears outnumber residents on Svalbard, and leaving the settlement without a rifle is against the rules.

The global seed vault is cut into the permafrost outside town. The sun does not set between April and August and does not rise from November to late January. Boats and snowmobiles go out to glaciers and abandoned Soviet mining towns.

Svalbard Church
The northernmost church in the world, at seventy-eight degrees, rebuilt in 1958 after the German navy destroyed the original in 1943. It is open around the clock, keeps coffee on, and functions as the town's living room as much as its church.

Svalbard Museum
A museum at Longyearbyen, the largest settlement of Svalbard. It shows the material left since people first came, together with the plants and animals of the islands, and sets out the conditions that have made human life possible in so hard a place.

Spitsbergen Airship Museum
A museum at Longyearbyen in Svalbard. The Italian Stefano Poli and the Norwegian Ingunn Løyning founded it together and worked towards opening it from 2005; its subject is the airship expeditions to the pole.
