   St. Philip's Castle

   A fortress guarding the mouth of Mahón harbour, built by Charles V from 1554 and later one of the largest in Europe. The Spanish demolished the surface works in 1782 so no one could use them again; the tunnels beneath survive and are visited by torchlight.

   Torre d'en Galmés

   A Talayotic settlement between Alaior and Son Bou, occupied from about 1400 BC and the largest prehistoric site on Menorca. It joined the World Heritage list with the rest of Talayotic Menorca in 2023.

   Camí de Cavalls

   An old path of a hundred and eighty-five kilometres that circles Menorca, laid out in the fourteenth century so that horsemen could watch the coast. It has been cleared and waymarked as a walking route in twenty stages.

   A small bay on the south coast of Menorca. It is a shingle beach hidden between cliffs, with no road access, so it has to be walked to.

   A Bronze Age site in southeastern Menorca. Its taula — the T-shaped megalithic structure found nowhere but on this island — still stands, with the surrounding sanctuary excavated around it.

   A round watchtower on the southeastern point of Menorca, one of the ring thrown up in the 18th century against French and Barbary raiders. It faces the islet of Illa de l'Aire and its lighthouse across a narrow channel.

   SS Lamoricière

   A French passenger liner that sank off Menorca in 1942. She went down in a storm with the loss of more than three hundred lives, one of the worst Mediterranean disasters of the period.

   Mola Fortress

   A fortress completed by Spain in the 1850s at the mouth of Mahón harbour. It is reckoned among the largest forts built in Europe after the Napoleonic period, and its galleries run for kilometres through the rock.

    A Bronze Age tomb at Alaior on Menorca. It is a naveta, a megalithic tomb shaped like an upturned boat, a form found nowhere but on this island.
