Mendoza makes most of Argentina's wine at the foot of the Andes, irrigated by snowmelt through channels the Huarpe dug before the Spanish arrived. Malbec, a grape France gave up on, is what it is known for.

Hundreds of wineries take visitors, and the Maipú district is flat enough to do by bicycle. Aconcagua, at 6,961 metres the highest mountain outside Asia, is a few hours west on the road to Chile.

    General San Martín Park

    The great park of Mendoza, laid out from 1896 to Carlos Thays's design on the desert edge west of the city and watered by the canals that made the province green. Its wrought-iron gates were shipped from England, and the Cerro de la Gloria rises at the far end.

    Our Lady of Loreto Cathedral, Mendoza

    The cathedral of Mendoza in Argentina. The original cathedral in the old town was brought down by the earthquake of 1861; a small nineteenth-century chapel was enlarged in 1934 as a provisional cathedral, and that is the present building.

    Plaza Chile

    One of the squares laid out around Mendoza's central plaza after the earthquake of 1861, named in thanks for the help Chile sent. At its centre San Martin and O'Higgins clasp hands over a sword; the square carried San Martin's own name from 1883 until 1904.
