   Musée Fabre

   A municipal museum founded in 1828 on the collection the painter François-Xavier Fabre brought back from Italy, and one of the richest galleries in France. Its Courbet and Bazille holdings are outstanding, and a wing was built for Pierre Soulages, who gave twenty of his black paintings.

   Montpellier Cathedral

   The cathedral of Montpellier, begun in 1364 as the chapel of a Benedictine monastery, whose porch is carried on two enormous round towers — a form unique in France. It is the only church in the city to survive the Wars of Religion intact.

   Gate of Peyrou

   A triumphal arch of 1693 at the east end of the Peyrou gardens, designed by François d'Orbay on the model of the Porte Saint-Denis in Paris, honouring Louis XIV. Reliefs show the crossing of the Rhine and the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.

   Sant Pèire e Sant Pau de Magalona Cathedral

   A former cathedral on a spit between the Arnel lagoon and the sea, about ten kilometres south of Montpellier, and the seat of the bishops of Maguelone until 1563. Its fortified Romanesque church stands almost alone among vineyards and salt flats.

   Jardin des plantes de Montpellier

   The oldest botanical garden in France, founded in 1593 by royal charter under Pierre Richer de Belleval, professor of botany and anatomy, and the model for the Paris Jardin des Plantes. It covers 4.5 hectares beside the medical school.

   Comedy Square

   The main square of Montpellier, called the Egg for its shape, dominated by the 1888 opera house and the Three Graces fountain of 1776. Every tram line in the city passes it and the whole town crosses it several times a day.

   Lattara

   An Etruscan and then Greek port at Lattes south of Montpellier, founded about 500 BC and mentioned by Roman writers, rediscovered in 1963. Its harbour, houses and cemeteries have been excavated and the finds are in the museum on the site.

   Tour de la Babotte

   A stump of the medieval city wall at the southern edge of the old town, rebuilt in the 18th century to carry an observatory on its top. Montpellier's astronomers worked from it, and one of the earliest balloon ascents in the city rose from beside it.

   Parc zoologique de Montpellier

   A zoo of eighty hectares in Mediterranean scrub north of the city, where animals are kept in large enclosures rather than pens and admission is free. A separate glasshouse recreates Amazonian rainforest and is ticketed.

    Port-Camargue

    A marina at Le Grau-du-Roi built in the 1960s as part of the Languedoc coastal development plan, with about 4,900 berths — one of the largest in Europe. Its plan of finger-shaped peninsulas gives most houses their own mooring.

   A citadel of 1624 built by Louis XIII after his siege reduced this Protestant stronghold, designed to watch the town rather than defend it. A lycée now occupies the interior and parts of the walls are open.

   The site of a medieval church on the pilgrim route to Santiago, where the money changers of twelfth-century Montpellier had their tables, which gave it the name. It was destroyed in the Wars of Religion; a city history centre now stands over the excavated remains.

   Espiguette

   A large dune system on the Gard coast at Le Grau-du-Roi, a protected area of about ten kilometres of sand shifting inland, with a lighthouse of 1869 at the point. Kitesurfers and naturists use different stretches of it.

   Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes

   The thirteenth-century walls of Aigues-Mortes, built for Louis IX as the port from which he sailed on crusade — a rectangular new town laid out in the marsh. The 1.6-kilometre circuit is complete, with twenty towers, and can be walked on top.

   An Iron Age hill town near Murviel-lès-Montpellier between Montpellier and Béziers, the chief settlement of the local Gallic people and later a Roman town. Its wall, forum and houses have been excavated on the hilltop.

    Phare de la méditerranée

    A water tower of 1943 at Palavas-les-Flots built in the form of a lighthouse, converted in 1988 so that a restaurant revolves at forty-five metres. The whole Languedoc coast and the lagoons behind it turn past the window.
