   Château d'Annecy

   A castle above the old town, twelfth to sixteenth century, once the seat of the counts of Geneva. The town bought the ruin and restored it, and it now holds a museum of Savoyard folk art and a research centre on Alpine lakes.

   Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard

   A medieval castle at Menthon-Saint-Bernard twelve kilometres south of Annecy. It stands on a rock two hundred metres above Lake Annecy and the Roc de Chère reserve, and has been a French historic monument since 1989.

   St. Peter's Cathedral

   The Catholic cathedral of Annecy and a listed national monument. Jacques Rossel built it in the early sixteenth century as the chapel of a Franciscan convent, and Francis de Sales preached in it.

   Palais de l'Isle

   A twelfth-century fortified house on an island in the Thiou at Annecy, Haute-Savoie. Long used as a prison, it is now an exhibition centre on local architecture and heritage, where the old courtroom, cells and chapel can be visited.

   Basilica of the Visitation

   A basilica on the Crêt du Maure, on the slopes of the Semnoz above Annecy, France. Visible from far off as it looks down on the city, it has become the emblem of Annecy's religious history.

   A pass at 1,147 metres in Talloires-Montmin, Haute-Savoie, France. It leads from Talloires on the east shore of Lake Annecy through the Montmin valley towards Faverges.

   Château de Montrottier

   A castle at Lovagny in Haute-Savoie, France, near the Fier gorges some ten kilometres west of Annecy. It began as a thirteenth-century fortified house, was rebuilt several times and restored in the nineteenth century.

   Château de Thorens

   A castle at Thorens-Glières in Haute-Savoie in France. It stands twenty kilometres northeast of Annecy on the climb towards the Glières plateau, and is often confused with the neighbouring château of Sales, demolished on the orders of Louis XIII in 1630.

    A limestone plateau in the Bornes massif in Haute-Savoie in France, twenty-nine kilometres from La Roche-sur-Foron and fifteen from Thorens-Glières. The Maquis des Glières held out here in 1944.
