Pakse is southern Laos in one town: the Mekong, a French grid, and the Bolaven plateau behind it, where coffee planted under the French still grows and waterfalls drop off the rim.

Wat Phou, a Khmer temple older than Angkor, is an hour south and World Heritage. Further down, the Mekong breaks into the four thousand islands, where Irrawaddy dolphins survive in small numbers. The loop is best done by motorbike.

    Wat Luang

    The largest monastery in Pakse, founded in 1935 on the bank of the Sedone, with a monks' school and a hall of painted pillars. Ornate family stupas stand through the grounds along the river.
