   Jewish quarter of Inca

   The old Jewish quarter of Inca, in the middle of Mallorca. The island's Jews were forced to convert in 1435, and their descendants — called xuetes — were still socially excluded into the twentieth century. The narrow street plan of the quarter survives.

   The parish church of Inca, rebuilt in baroque form in the 18th century on medieval foundations, its bell tower standing above the roofs of the town. The shoemakers' guild that made the town's fortune kept its chapel inside.
