Shantou is the capital of Chaoshan cooking, which Chinese food writers treat as a destination in itself — beef hotpot with the cuts carved to order and cooked for seconds, oyster omelettes, and gongfu tea between everything.

The old treaty-port arcades around Xiaogongyuan are being restored. Nan'ao island, joined by a long bridge, has the beaches. Come hungry and stay longer than planned.

    Jieyang Tower

    A Han-style tower in Jieyang built on the water and themed on the lotus, standing over the confluence that gives the city its name. It is modern construction in a traditional idiom and is lit at night as the town's landmark.

    Shuangfeng Temple

    A Buddhist temple in the Rongcheng district of Jieyang in Guangdong. With Kaiyuan and Lingshan it is one of the three great temples of the Chaoshan region, and the evening bell of Shuangfeng was counted among the eight views of Jieyang.

    Jinxianmen Gate Tower

    A Ming gate tower of 1622 in the old wall of Jieyang, the only one of the city's gates to survive. Its double eaves rise over a busy street, and the townspeople still carry lanterns through it at new year.
