Tengchong sits on a volcanic field in western Yunnan — around ninety cones, hot springs that boil hard enough to cook eggs in, and a geothermal valley called the Sea of Heat.

Heshun, the old town beside it, was built by families who made money overseas and sent it home; they endowed a public library in 1928 that is still lending. Jade from Myanmar is traded at the border, and the ginkgo villages turn yellow in November.

    Heshun Town

    An old village four kilometres southwest of Tengchong in Yunnan. It is known for its courtyard houses built in tiers up the hillside, and for the libraries and family halls left by returning overseas Chinese.

    Tengchong volcanic field

    A Cenozoic volcanic field on the southeastern edge of the Tibetan plateau, forty kilometres from the Myanmar border. Its last recorded major eruption was in 1609 and the volcanoes are taken to be extinct, but the geothermal field attached to them remains active.
