   Taiyuan Ancient Mosque

   A mosque in Taiyuan founded under the Tang and rebuilt in the Ming, laid out as a Chinese courtyard house with the prayer hall at the back. Its screens and stelae carry Arabic inscriptions cut in Chinese style.

   Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Taiyuan

   The cathedral of the Taiyuan archdiocese, first built in 1635 and rebuilt in 1870 and again in 1902 after the Boxer uprising, in which missionaries and converts were killed here. It is the largest Catholic church in Shanxi.

   Shanxi Museum

   The largest museum in Shanxi, in Taiyuan, holding four hundred thousand objects and 110,000 volumes of old books. It opened on 9 October 1919 as the Shanxi Educational Library and Museum, making it one of the earliest museums in China.

   Tomb of Xu Xianxiu

   A tomb at Wangjiafeng village in the Yingze district of Taiyuan in Shanxi. It holds Xu Xianxiu, Prince of Wu'an and a commander under the Northern Qi; it is known for its wall paintings and was excavated between 2001 and 2003.

   Longshan Grotto

   Taoist caves cut into the sandstone southwest of Taiyuan in the 13th century by the priest Song Defang, holding some forty statues of the Quanzhen masters. Rock carvings on Taoist rather than Buddhist subjects are rare anywhere in China.

   Jinyuan Confucian Temple

   The Confucian temple of the old Taiyuan county seat, laid out under the Ming with the customary halls in line behind a pool and gate. It stands within the walled town of Jinyuan, south of the modern city.

   Taiyuan Confucian Temple

   The prefectural Confucian temple, rebuilt on this ground in 1881 after floods wrecked the old one, its halls set out behind a pool and a spirit wall. It now houses the Shanxi folk museum, with local costume, paper cuts and shadow puppets in the side buildings.
