   Cathedral of Santa María de Vitoria

   A Gothic cathedral of the fourteenth century whose restoration has been running since 1994 and is open to visitors as it goes — you walk the scaffolding and the crypt with a helmet on. Ken Follett based a novel on it and there is a statue of him outside.

   Ajuria Enea

   A building in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the official residence of the lehendakari, head of the Basque government. It was chosen for its architectural quality and bought from the provincial council of Álava in 1980.

   Cathedral of María Inmaculada of Vitoria

   The New Cathedral of Vitoria, begun in 1907 in neo-Gothic style and never entirely finished, work stopping and starting across the century. A diocesan museum fills the crypt, and the nave is among the largest in Spain.

   Virgen Blanca Square

   The square where the old and new towns of Vitoria-Gasteiz meet. A monument to the battle of Vitoria of 1813, in which Napoleon's army was defeated, stands on it, and the August festival opens here each year.

   Artium Museum

   A museum of contemporary art in Vitoria-Gasteiz, opened in 2002. Its galleries were put underground and a square left above them, so that the building returns open space to the city.

   A Gothic church in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It stands on the edge of the old town hill above the square below, and the image of the Virgen Blanca, patron of the city, stands in a niche on its front.

   Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz

   A Romanesque sanctuary on a hill east of Vitoria-Gasteiz, built in the twelfth century. It holds the patron virgin of Álava and has drawn pilgrims ever since.

   A salt valley at Añana outside Vitoria-Gasteiz. Salt has been worked here for more than six thousand years, on timber terraces stacked up the hillside over which brine from the springs is run and left to dry in the sun.

   Ataria

   A nature interpretation centre beside the Salburua wetland at Vitoria-Gasteiz. It deals with the ecology of a wetland on the edge of the city, and its observation decks run out into the reedbeds.

   A museum of playing cards in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It grew out of the collection of the Fournier family, who printed cards in the city, and holds more than twenty thousand decks from around the world.

   A district in the southeast of Vitoria-Gasteiz. It was built in the 1950s as workers' housing, and after it was emptied young people moved in and made it into a self-governing community.

   A square in central Vitoria-Gasteiz, designed in the 1980s by the architect Manuel de las Casas with the sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Low retaining walls and flights of steps divide it into levels.
