Weihai is a small, tidy coastal city on the tip of the Shandong peninsula, regularly placed at the top of Chinese liveability lists and used by locals as a summer escape.

Liugong Island in its harbour was the base of the Beiyang fleet, destroyed in the war with Japan in 1895, and the museum there treats it seriously. Ferries connect to South Korea, the beaches are broad, and the seafood is cheap.

    Liugong Island

    Liugong Island was the base of the Beiyang Fleet in the Sino-Japanese War. With its museum of that war and a path around the island it makes a half day, reached by boat.

    Houlonghe Shuiku

    A reservoir built in 1960 in the hills of Weihai, holding back the Houlong river for irrigation and, later, town supply. Wooded slopes come down to the water on three sides.

    Yushan Shuiku

    A reservoir completed in 1970 in the hills near Weihai, built for irrigation and flood control and now drawn on for drinking water. Its shore is used for angling and walking.

    Mishan Shuiku

    A reservoir completed in 1960 on the upper Muzhu river in Wendeng, its clay-core dam 950 metres long and nearly 21 metres high. It holds 280 million cubic metres and waters some 14,000 hectares of farmland.
