Wuhan is where the Han meets the Yangtze, and the Yellow Crane Tower on the south bank has been rebuilt a dozen times since the third century for the view over the river.

The provincial museum holds the bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng — sixty-five bronze bells cast in 433 BC, still in tune, each producing two notes. Breakfast is sesame noodles. The university's cherry trees bring crowds in late March.

Panlongcheng
A walled Shang-period city of the Erligang culture, about 1500 to 1300 BC, on the northern edge of Wuhan — the earliest city found this far south in China. Its bronze foundry and elite tombs show the Shang state reaching the middle Yangtze.

Guiyuan Temple
A Buddhist temple on Cuiwei Road in Hanyang, founded in 1658 under the Shunzhi emperor on 1.89 hectares. Its arhat hall holds five hundred clay figures made between 1822 and 1831, each with a different face, and a scripture pavilion of 1922 keeps the temple's treasures.

Hubei Provincial Museum
A first-class provincial museum holding the finds from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, opened in 1978 — including a set of sixty-five bronze bells that still play in tune after 2,400 years. The Sword of Goujian, uncorroded after 2,500 years, is also here.

A 311.4-metre concrete television tower in Hanyang district, with an observation deck at about 221 metres. It was the tallest tower in China when finished in 1986 and looks across the river confluence.

Revolution Museum
A museum in Wuchang built for the centenary of the 1911 Wuchang uprising that began the Xinhai Revolution and ended two thousand years of imperial rule. Construction ran from 2009 to 2011 and the building covers 22,000 square metres.

A theme park in Hongshan district opened on 29 April 2012, the fifth in the Happy Valley chain, with roller coasters and a water park. It draws several million visitors a year from central China.

Baotong Temple
A Buddhist temple on the southern slope of Hong Hill in Wuchang, founded in the Southern Dynasties period and one of the four great temples of Wuhan. Its seven-storey Hongshan pagoda dates from 1280.

Saint Joseph's Cathedral
The cathedral of the Wuhan diocese, completed in 1876 on what is now Shanghai Road in the old Hankou concessions. Closed through the Cultural Revolution, it reopened in 1980 and holds services daily.
