Xining is the last low city before the Tibetan plateau, at 2,275 metres, and where the railway to Lhasa begins its climb.

Kumbum monastery, founded in 1583 at the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, is one of the six great Gelugpa institutions and famous for sculptures made of yak butter. Qinghai Lake, the largest in China, is ringed with rapeseed flowers in July, and the Chaka salt flat mirrors the sky.

    A Tibetan Buddhist monastery at Lusar in Xining in Qinghai, also called Ta'er Temple. It was founded in 1583 in a narrow valley in the old Tibetan region of Amdo, and is affiliated to Drepung west of Lhasa; it marks the birthplace of Tsongkhapa.

    Gönlung Jampa Ling monastery

    A Gelug Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Huzhu Tu Autonomous County in Qinghai, known in Chinese as Youning Temple. Founded in 1604, it housed the first Gelug college in northeastern Tibet and was the seat of the Changkya and Thuken incarnation lineages.

    Ma Bufang Mansion

    A mansion at Xining in Qinghai where the Hui warlord Ma Bufang and his family lived from 1943 to 1949. As a Kuomintang officer he hung portraits of Sun Yat-sen, the blue sky and white sun flag, and portraits of the Ma warlords throughout it.
