Yantai faces north from the Shandong peninsula and keeps a hill of old consulates above the harbour from its treaty-port years, with a long promenade below them.

Chinese wine started here: Changyu was founded in 1892 and its cellars are open as a museum. The peninsula grows the apples the rest of the country buys, and the seafood is landed a few streets from where it is cooked.

    Fenghuangshan Shuiku

    A reservoir built in 1957 in the hills behind Yantai, one of the string of dams raised across Shandong in that decade for irrigation and flood control. It now forms part of the city's water supply.

    Longjiaoshan Shuiku

    A reservoir built between 1959 and 1960 on the middle Rushan river, its earth dam 721 metres long and 23 metres high across a catchment of 277 square kilometres. It holds 105 million cubic metres and supplies the town of Rushan.

    Menlou Shuiku

    The main source of Yantai's drinking water, on the Neijia river in Fushan district, with a catchment of 1,079 square kilometres and a capacity of 244 million cubic metres. Built for flood control and irrigation, it was turned over chiefly to city supply from 1982.

    Mishan Shuiku

    A reservoir completed in 1960 on the upper Muzhu river in Wendeng, its clay-core dam 950 metres long and nearly 21 metres high. It holds 280 million cubic metres and waters some 14,000 hectares of farmland.
