   The state gallery of South Australia, founded in 1881 on North Terrace, and after the National Gallery of Victoria the strongest collection of Australian art in the country. Entry is free and the colonial and Aboriginal holdings are hung together.

   South Australian Museum

   A natural history museum founded in 1856 on North Terrace, holding the largest collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural material in the world. Its Antarctic gallery is built on what Douglas Mawson brought back.

   Adelaide Zoo

   A zoo of 1883, the second oldest in Australia after Melbourne's, in the parkland north of the centre and run as a non-profit. It kept the only giant pandas in the southern hemisphere, and its walk-through aviaries and Sumatran tigers carry the rest of it.

   Belair National Park

   A park of eight hundred and thirty-five hectares nine kilometres from the city, proclaimed in 1891 and the first national park in South Australia. The governors' summer residence still stands among its gum trees.

   St Francis Xavier's Cathedral

   The Catholic cathedral of Adelaide, begun in 1856 in Early English Gothic and built in stages over half a century. Its tower was finished but the spire never was, which is why it sits oddly low among the buildings around it.

   St Peter's Cathedral

   The Anglican cathedral of Adelaide, built between 1869 and 1904 with twin spires that close the view up King William Street. It stands across the Torrens from the city beside the Adelaide Oval, and its bells are the heaviest in the southern hemisphere.

   Adelaide Botanic Garden

   Fifty-one hectares at the corner of the park lands, opened in 1857. Its Palm House of 1877 was shipped in pieces from Bremen, and a separate pavilion grows the Amazon waterlily whose leaves carry a child's weight.

   Victoria Square

   The central square of Colonel Light's 1837 plan for Adelaide, where the two main streets cross. It carries the Kaurna name Tarntanyangga alongside the English one, and flies the Aboriginal flag permanently.

   Central Adelaide Mosque

   A mosque built in 1888 by Afghan cameleers who carried freight across the inland, and the oldest surviving mosque in Australia. Its four minarets were added in 1903; the graves of some of the cameleers are nearby.

    Migration Museum

    A museum of migration in the buildings of the old Destitute Asylum, covering the people who came to South Australia — German Lutherans, Cornish miners, post-war Italians, Vietnamese — and, unflinchingly, what their arrival did to the Kaurna.

   Carrick Hill

   An estate built in the 1930s in Tudor style by a couple who bought doors, panelling and staircases from a demolished English house. Their paintings, including works by Cézanne and Matisse, still hang where they hung them.

   National Railway Museum

   The largest undercover railway museum in Australia, at Port Adelaide, holding locomotives and carriages from the state systems and the transcontinental lines. Several of the engines are steamed on running days.

   Victoria Park

   A park in the southeastern park lands used for horse racing since the 1840s and, more recently, as part of a street circuit for motor racing. It reverts to open grass between events.

   National War Memorial

   A memorial of 1931 on North Terrace to South Australians killed in the First World War, carved in Angaston marble with figures of a youth and the spirit of duty on its two faces.

   Torrens Linear Park

   A park that follows the Torrens for more than thirty kilometres from the hills to the sea, with a continuous path along it. It was the first linear park of its kind in Australia and doubles as flood control.

   Beehive Corner

   A corner building at the head of the Rundle Mall, named for a shop that stood here from 1849 and marked by a gilded beehive. Adelaide has arranged to meet at it for well over a century.

   Chinatown

   The Chinatown of central Adelaide, beside the Central Market, where restaurants from across Asia fill two arcaded blocks. It works as one errand with the market, and the paifang gates on Moonta Street mark either end.

   Rymill Park

   A park in the eastern park lands with a lake for boating and a rose garden beside it, one link in the ring of parkland that Colonel Light drew around the city centre.

   Fort Glanville Conservation Park

   A fort built in 1880 on the coast at Semaphore, the first permanent fortification in South Australia, put up when the colonies expected a Russian raid. It is restored, and its guns are fired on open days.

    Bonython Park

    Seventeen hectares of park on the Torrens northwest of the centre, with open lawns, a cycling facility and a weir. It is one of the busiest of the park lands for weekend use.
