   Fremantle Prison

   A prison built by convicts between 1851 and 1859 and used until 1991, making it one of the longest-serving in Australia. It is World Heritage as a convict site, and the tunnels beneath it are toured by boat.

   Perth Zoo

   A zoo of seventeen hectares opened in 1898 at South Perth, reached by ferry across the Swan. It breeds numbats and dibblers — small Western Australian marsupials that survive nowhere else — for release into fenced reserves in the wheatbelt.

   St Mary's Cathedral, Perth

   The Catholic cathedral of Perth, where a nineteenth-century Gothic Revival church was joined in 2009 to a modern extension in pale stone and glass — the two halves meeting mid-nave without pretending to match.

   Perth Mosque

   A mosque founded in 1905 by Afghan cameleers and Malay migrants, the oldest in Western Australia. Cameleers ran the inland freight routes before the railways and left mosques across the interior.

   Kalamunda National Park

   A national park on the Darling Scarp twenty-three kilometres east of Perth, holding jarrah and marri forest above a granite valley, with walking tracks that link into the long-distance Bibbulmun Track.

   Western Australian Museum

   The state museum, reopened in November 2020 as Boola Bardip after being rebuilt around the walls of the old Perth gaol. Its Aboriginal galleries were written with the communities concerned, and a nine-metre blue whale skeleton hangs in the atrium.

   Perth Australia Temple

   A temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Perth suburbs, dedicated in 2001. Only members may go inside; the grounds and the visitors' centre are open.

   A Catholic church of the early twentieth century on Adelaide Street in Fremantle, built for the port's Irish community and raised to the rank of minor basilica in 1994.

   Cottesloe Beach

   The best-known beach in Perth, backed by a terrace of Norfolk pines and a hotel that has stood since 1905. Each March a free outdoor sculpture exhibition is installed along the sand.

   St George's Cathedral, Perth

   The Anglican cathedral of Perth, consecrated in 1888 and built in handmade brick to a design by Edmund Blacket, who never saw the site. It stands on St Georges Terrace between office towers that have grown up around it since.

   Aquarium of Western Australia

   An aquarium at Hillarys harbour built around the coast of Western Australia, divided into five zones from the tropical north to the temperate south. Its acrylic tunnel runs ninety-eight metres beneath sharks and rays.

   HMAS Ovens

   An Oberon-class submarine that served the Australian navy through the Cold War, now lifted out of the water at the Fremantle maritime museum. Tours go through the full length of the boat, including the torpedo room.

   Whiteman Park

   Four thousand hectares of bushland northeast of Perth, among the largest urban parks in Australia. Heritage trams and a narrow-gauge railway run through it, and much of it is left as banksia woodland.

   Langley Park

   A rectangle of grass about 900 by 100 metres along Riverside Drive, reclaimed from the Swan River between 1921 and 1935. Norman Brearley used it as an airstrip in the 1920s, and light aircraft still land here for fly-ins; ten did so in 2003 for the centenary of powered flight.

   Bathers Beach

   A small beach beside Fremantle's old town, used by whalers in the nineteenth century and now reachable on foot from the port. It is where Europeans first came ashore in this part of the coast.

   A red brick church and monastery in North Perth, built in 1903 for the Redemptorist order and still in use, with cloisters and a garden behind the street front.

   C.Y. O'Connor Beach

   A beach south of Fremantle named after the engineer who built the harbour and the pipeline that carried water to the goldfields. Hounded by the press, he rode into the sea near here and shot himself in 1902; a statue of him stands offshore.
