   Museum of Old and New Art

   David Walsh's private museum, opened in 2011 and dug into sandstone cliffs on a bend of the Derwent, so that you enter at the top and work down. Egyptian coffins sit alongside deliberately provocative contemporary work, and the ferry up from town is part of it.

   Hobart Synagogue

   A synagogue on Argyle Street in Hobart, consecrated in 1845 and the oldest synagogue building in Australia. It is a rare example of Egyptian Revival, and the back benches were reserved for convict members.

   Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

   Founded in 1846 by the Royal Society of Tasmania and the second oldest museum in Australia. Its Tasmanian Aboriginal galleries were rewritten with the community, and it holds thylacine specimens from the years when the animal was still being shot for bounty.

   Hobart Zoo

   A zoo on the Queens Domain that operated from 1895 until 1937, and where the last known thylacine died in September 1936 after being locked out of its shelter overnight. The site is marked; nothing of the zoo remains.

   St Mary's Cathedral, Hobart

   The Catholic cathedral of Hobart, begun in 1866 in Gothic Revival sandstone, and the seat of the archbishop of a diocese that covers the whole of Tasmania.

   Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens

   Fourteen hectares begun in 1818, the second oldest botanical garden in Australia, with a heated wall for fruit trees built by convicts. Its Subantarctic Plant House, chilled and misted to imitate Macquarie Island, exists nowhere else.

   Hobart Mosque

   The mosque of Hobart, built in 1985 for a small Muslim community grown from post-war migration. It stands in a suburban street and serves as prayer hall and community centre for southern Tasmania.

   Military Museum of Tasmania

   An army museum inside Anglesea Barracks, in use since 1814 and the oldest military establishment in Australia still occupied. The collection runs from the convict garrison through both world wars, and the barracks themselves are the exhibit.

   St David's Park

   A park in central Hobart laid out over the colony's first burial ground of 1804. Headstones of the earliest settlers and convicts were lifted and set into the walls, and can be read along them.

    Hobart Cenotaph

    Tasmania's principal war memorial, raised on the Queens Domain in 1925 above the city and the Derwent. Anzac Day services are held at it each April.
