Apia is the only city in Samoa, and the country ran a day behind Australia until 2011, when it crossed the date line and skipped 30 December altogether. Robert Louis Stevenson spent his last four years at Vailima above it and is buried on Mount Vaea; the house is now a museum.

To Sua, an hour east, is a collapsed lava tube filled with sea water that you enter down a wooden ladder some thirty metres long. Sunday belongs to church and singing, and almost nothing else opens.

    Falemauga Caves

    Large caverns in a run of lava tubes along the central ridge of Upolu, used as a refuge in war and reached by a guided walk through plantation. One chamber runs for hundreds of metres and holds standing water.

    Museum of Samoa

    The national museum of Samoa, in a school built by the German administration before 1914, and known by the Samoan name Falemata'aga. It covers the fine mats, tattooing and voyaging of the islands, and Samoa's passage through German, New Zealand and independent rule.

    O Le Pupu-Puʿe National Park

    Samoa's oldest national park, declared in 1978 across 5,019 hectares of southern Upolu and running from Mount Fito, the island's highest point, down to the sea cliffs. Rainforest, marsh and the O Le Pupu lava field lie within it; Ramsar listed the wetlands in 2016.
