   Alice Springs Telegraph Station

   The telegraph repeater station of 1872 that was the original European settlement, four kilometres north of the present town. The waterhole beside it — a spring in the Todd River, named after the wife of the telegraph superintendent — is what the town is called after.

   Old Ghan Heritage Railway and Museum

   A museum on the narrow-gauge line that carried the Ghan north from Adelaide until it closed in 1980, with locomotives and rolling stock preserved by volunteers. The old railway's history of washouts and week-long delays is the good part.

   Alice Springs Desert Park

   Thirteen hundred hectares outside town, of which fifty are laid out as walk-through habitats — sand country, mulga, woodland. The nocturnal house holds bilbies and mala that survive almost nowhere in the wild, and free-flying raptors are shown twice a day.
