Broome was a pearling port from the 1880s and drew Japanese, Malay and Chinese divers, whose graves fill the cemetery. Cable Beach runs twenty-two kilometres and camels walk it at sunset.

From March to October a full moon rising over the mudflats of Roebuck Bay throws a reflection that looks like a stair — the Staircase to the Moon. Dinosaur prints show at low tide at Gantheaume Point.

    Cable Beach

    Twenty-two kilometres of white sand on the Indian Ocean at Broome, named after the undersea telegraph cable that came ashore here in 1889. Camels are ridden along it at sunset, which has become the image of the town.

    The Catholic cathedral of Broome and the seat of a diocese covering the Kimberley, a region larger than most European countries with a scattered and largely Aboriginal congregation.

    Fraser Lake

    A lake in the far north of Western Australia, seventeen hundred kilometres from Perth, ringed by woodland. Like most water in the Kimberley it fills in the wet and shrinks through the dry.
