Bora Bora is a lagoon around the remains of a volcano, with Mount Otemanu at 727 metres in the middle and a ring of coral motu holding the ocean off.

French Polynesia invented the overwater bungalow in the 1960s and this island made it famous. Rays and blacktip sharks are fed in the shallows on lagoon tours; Matira Point is the beach worth walking at dusk.

    Otemanu

    The highest point of Bora Bora at seven hundred and twenty-seven metres, the eroded plug of the volcano the lagoon has grown around. Its summit cannot be reached: the basalt is too rotten to climb, so guided walks stop on the shoulder below.

    The second peak of Bora Bora at six hundred and sixty-one metres, and the one that can actually be climbed — a steep half-day with ropes on the upper rock and the whole lagoon laid out beneath.

    A resort on a coral islet off Bora Bora, with overwater bungalows over the lagoon and a view across it to Mount Otemanu. It is the only property the group operates in French Polynesia.
