Dushanbe grew from a village whose name means Monday, after its market day, into a Soviet capital of tree-lined avenues; the flagpole on Rudaki Avenue was briefly the tallest in the world.

The real destinations are outside it. The Pamir Highway runs east over passes above four thousand metres to the Afghan border, and the Fann mountains hold Iskanderkul, the lake named for Alexander.

Tajikistan's national museum, opened in a new building beside Rudaki Park in 2013. Four floors run from natural history through antiquity and ethnography to the modern era, taking in Sogdian wall painting, carved wood and Soviet-period art.

Dushanbe Synagogue
A synagogue of the Bukharan Jewish community, built in the nineteenth century in one of Dushanbe's two Jewish quarters and demolished between 2006 and 2008 to clear ground for the presidential palace. A replacement building was donated afterwards.

National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan
The museum of antiquities, whose great object is the reclining Buddha from Ajina-Tepa — thirteen metres long, made of clay in the seventh century, and the largest in Central Asia. The Penjikent wall paintings of Sogdian feasts and battles are the other reason to come.
