   Talgar peak

   The highest peak of the Trans-Ili Alatau at 4,979 metres, standing directly behind Almaty and visible from the city on clear days. It is a serious mountaineering objective rather than a walk, first climbed in 1938.

   Kölsay Lakes National Park

   A national park on the northern slope of the Tien Shan holding the three Kolsay lakes, stepped up a valley to two and a half thousand metres, and Kaindy, where a drowned spruce forest still stands upright underwater — the valley was dammed by the earthquake of 1911.

   Shymbulak

   The largest ski resort in Central Asia, above the Medeu skating rink outside Almaty, with runs between two thousand two hundred and three thousand two hundred metres and a gondola up from the dam. The season runs from December into April.

   Ile-Alatau National Park

   A national park established in 1996 across some two hundred thousand hectares of the Zailiysky Alatau south of Almaty. It runs from the Turgen gorge in the east to the Chemolgan river, over spruce forest and glaciers.

   Chong-Kemin River

   A river in Kyrgyzstan rising from glaciers where the Kungey and Trans-Ili ranges meet, running west down a narrow valley to join the Chu in the Boom gorge. Its upper valley is a yurt-stay and rafting route between Bishkek and Issyk-Kul.

   Kaskelen

   A river running down from the Zailiysky Alatau through the Karasai and Zhambyl districts west of Almaty, giving its name to the town it passes. Snowmelt swells it in spring, and irrigation channels draw off much of its water by late summer.

   Little Almatinka

   The river that runs down through Almaty from the Tuyuksu glacier. Mudflows off the mountain came down it in 1921 and again in 1973, the first destroying much of the old town, which is why the enormous Medeu barrage was built across the gorge above the city.
