   Ala-Too Square

   The central square, laid out in 1984 for the sixtieth anniversary of the Kirghiz SSR. A statue of Lenin stood at its centre until 2003; since 2011 it has been Manas on horseback, and the square was the stage for the uprisings of 2005 and 2010.

   Bishkek Central Mosque

   The central mosque of Bishkek, begun in 2012 and opened in 2018, paid for by Turkey's religious directorate and holding some twenty thousand worshippers — the largest in Central Asia. Its Ottoman form is a deliberate contrast to the Soviet city around it.

   Ata-Beyit

   A memorial at Chong-Tash outside Bishkek whose name means grave of our fathers. It marks the pit where 137 people shot in Stalin's purge of 1938 were found in 1991; the writer Chingiz Aitmatov and the dead of the 2010 uprising lie here as well.

   Oktyabr District

   The southeastern district of Bishkek, with about two hundred and forty thousand residents, taking in the Tokoldosh housing area. Its southern edge runs up towards the Alamedin gorge and the mountains.

   Kyrgyz State Historical Museum

   The national history museum on Ala-Too Square, built in 1984 as a Lenin museum and reopened in 2021 after a long rebuilding. Its holdings run from Saka gold and Scythian bronzes through felt work and yurts to displays of the Soviet decades.

   M. V. Frunze Museum

   A museum built in 1967 around the low mud-brick house where Mikhail Frunze, the Red Army commander born here in 1885, spent his childhood. The cottage stands preserved inside the concrete hall raised over it.

   National Museum of Fine Arts Gapar Aitiev

   The national art museum of Kyrgyzstan, in Bishkek, named after the painter Gapar Aitiev. It holds Kyrgyz painting and sculpture alongside felt work and other nomadic craft.

   A square laid out in 1985 for the fortieth anniversary of the defeat of Germany, with three curved ribs shaped like the frame of a yurt over an eternal flame and a bronze woman waiting for a soldier who is not coming back.
