   Mỹ Sơn

   A valley of Hindu brick temples built by the Cham kings between the fourth and thirteenth centuries, and their holiest site. The bricks are bonded so tightly that no mortar is visible and nobody has reproduced the method; American bombing in 1969 destroyed much of the main group.

   Bach Ma National Park

   A park of two hundred and twenty square kilometres between Hue and Da Nang, rising to a French hill station at fourteen hundred metres. It is one of the wettest places in Vietnam, which is why the forest on it is so dense.

   Japanese Bridge

   A covered footbridge with a small temple built into it, put up around 1590 by the Japanese merchants of Hoi An to reach the Chinese quarter. It appears on the twenty-thousand dong note and was heavily restored in 2024.

   Indrapura

   The Cham capital from 875, at Dong Duong south of Da Nang, and the seat of a large Buddhist monastery unusual in a Hindu kingdom. War destroyed nearly all of it; the sculpture that survived is in the Da Nang museum.

   Museum of Cham Sculpture

   A museum founded in 1915 by French archaeologists to hold Cham sculpture, and still the largest such collection in the world. Seeing it before My Son makes the ruins legible; the sandstone figures were cut for the shrines there.

   A gallery in Hoi An built on a French photographer's twenty-year project to record Vietnam's ethnic minorities, showing his portraits beside the costumes the sitters wore. Entry is free and several of the groups shown now number only a few hundred.

   My Khe Beach

   My Khe Beach is the long white strand that runs alongside the city of Da Nang. Sunrise swims and the seafood restaurants along the sand are both daily life here and the reason visitors come.

   Museum of Sa Huynh Culture

   A museum at Hội An in Quảng Nam province in Vietnam. It was founded in 1994 and displays the pottery and other material of the prehistoric Sa Huỳnh culture, taken to be the first inhabitants of the port and traders with Southeast Asia, southern India and China.

   Museum of Trade Ceramics

   A museum in a restored timber merchant's house in Hoi An's old quarter, showing ceramics raised from the port and from wrecks offshore. The pieces trace the town's trade with China, Japan, India, Thailand and the Philippines from the 15th century onward.
