   Imperial City of Hue

   The walled royal enclosure inside the citadel of Hue, built from 1804 and laid out on Chinese principles with the throne hall on the axis. Fighting in 1968 destroyed much of it; it became World Heritage in 1993 and restoration continues.

   Thiên Mụ Temple

   A temple founded in 1601 on a bluff above the Perfume River, its seven-storey tower of 1844 the unofficial emblem of Hue. The car that carried the monk Thich Quang Duc to his self-immolation in 1963 is kept in the grounds.

   Tomb of Khai Dinh

   The tomb of the twelfth Nguyen emperor, built between 1920 and 1931 in concrete and faced inside with mosaic of broken porcelain and glass. Its mixture of European and Vietnamese detail was disliked at the time and is now its attraction.

   Tomb of Tự Đức

   The tomb of the Nguyễn emperor Tự Đức at Huế in Vietnam, formally the Khiêm mausoleum. It was built over three years from 1864 to 1867 and divides into a temple area and a tomb area; the emperor wrote his own inscription because he had no heir to compose it.

   Phủ Cam Cathedral

   The Catholic cathedral of Hue, built between 1963 and 2000 on a site used by the church since the seventeenth century, in a modern idiom with a soaring concrete front. It is the seat of the archdiocese.

   Hue Museum of Royal Fine Arts

   A museum of the Nguyen court in the Long An palace of 1845, a timber hall built without nails and moved to this site. Court robes, enamelled porcelain ordered from China and the emperors' furniture are shown in the rooms they were made for.

   Phú Xuân

   The name Hue carried as the capital of the Nguyen lords and then of the Tay Son dynasty, before the Nguyen emperors renamed it in 1802 and built the citadel on the site.

   Thế Miếu

   The dynastic ancestral temple inside the citadel, holding the altars of ten Nguyen emperors. Nine bronze urns stand in the courtyard in front, cast in the 1830s and each engraved with the landscapes and produce of the empire.

    Tomb of Gia Long

    The tomb of Gia Long, who founded the Nguyen dynasty and died in 1820, twenty kilometres south of Hue among pine hills. He is buried beside his empress, which no later emperor arranged for himself.
