   St. Nicholas Cathedral

   The cathedral of Da Lat, built between 1931 and 1942 with a spire of forty-seven metres topped by a weathercock, which is why everyone calls it the chicken church. Its stained glass was made in Grenoble and shipped out.

   Domaine de Marie

   A convent church of the early 1940s in Da Lat, pink-walled under a steep tiled roof, mixing French massing with Vietnamese detail. The wife of the governor-general of Indochina, who funded it, is buried behind the altar.

   Đà Lạt market

   Da Lat's central market, on several floors with the stalls spilling into the square outside after dark. It sells what the highlands grow — artichokes, strawberries, flowers and vegetables that will not ripen in the lowlands.

   Linh Phuoc Temple

   A temple at Trai Mat eight kilometres from Da Lat, every surface of it — dragons, columns, the forty-nine-metre tower — mosaicked in broken bottle glass and smashed pottery. Locals call it the bottle pagoda, and the effect is somewhere between devout and delirious.

   Linh Son Pagoda

   A Buddhist temple on a low hill northwest of central Da Lat, built between 1938 and 1940 in a plain Sino-Vietnamese style. Its bronze bell weighs a tonne and a half and the grounds look over the town.

   Truc Lam Temple

   A Zen monastery built in 1993 on Phoenix Mountain outside Da Lat, above Tuyen Lam lake. A cable car runs to it over pine forest, and it holds meditation retreats in the Truc Lam tradition revived from the thirteenth century.
