   Museum of Islamic Art

   I. M. Pei's museum of 2008, built on an island made for it off the corniche so that nothing could ever be put up in front of it. The stacked stone cubes derive from the ablution fountain of the Ibn Tulun mosque in Cairo, and the collection covers fourteen centuries from Spain to India.

   National Museum of Qatar

   Jean Nouvel's building of 2019, three hundred and sixteen interlocking discs assembled to look like a desert rose, the crystal that forms in Qatari sand. It wraps around the 1906 palace of Sheikh Abdullah, which is the one old thing in it.

   Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque

   Qatar's state mosque, opened in Doha in 2011 and named for the eighteenth-century reformer whose teaching the country follows. It holds thirty thousand worshippers under a field of low sand-coloured domes.

   Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

   The first church built in Qatar since the seventh century, consecrated in 2008 in the religious compound at Abu Hamour. It carries no cross, bell or spire on the outside by agreement with the state, and serves a congregation of migrant workers that runs into the tens of thousands.

   Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center

   A mosque and cultural centre near the Doha corniche, marked by a spiral minaret modelled on the ninth-century tower at Samarra. It runs free tours, language classes and explanations of Islam for non-Muslims.

   Mathaf

   The Arab Museum of Modern Art, opened in 2010 in a converted school, with over nine thousand works — the largest collection of modern and contemporary Arab art anywhere. It fills the gap between the Islamic art museum's manuscripts and the towers outside.

   Qatar Museums

   The state body founded in 2005 that runs Qatar's museums, among them the Museum of Islamic Art, the Arab museum of modern art and the National Museum. It is the instrument of the country's attempt to buy and build a cultural capital.

   Amiri Diwan of the State of Qatar

   The office of the emir of Qatar, on the site of the old fort at the western end of the corniche. The building is closed, but the guard and the setting on the bay can be seen from the road.

   West Bay

   The district of towers on the northern side of Doha bay, built almost entirely since 2000. It is what the city's skyline means, seen from the corniche across the water at dusk.

    Al Bidda Park

    A park along the corniche and one of the oldest in Doha, laid out in the 1970s on rising ground. From its top the whole bay and the towers on the far side come into view.

   Barzan Tower

   A pair of watchtowers northwest of Doha, built in the late nineteenth century and rebuilt in 1910, that guarded a well and were also used to observe the moon for the start of Ramadan. They are among the few pre-oil structures left standing in the country.

   Education City Mosque

   A mosque at Education City, opened in 2015 and raised on five columns for the five pillars of Islam, with water channels crossing the courtyard to the door. Verses are cut into the concrete of the outer walls.

   Bin Mahmoud

   One of the older mixed districts of Doha, south of the centre, with shops, schools and apartment blocks rather than towers. It houses migrant families and middle-income Qataris together, which most newer districts do not.

   A district of Al Rayyan on the southern side of Doha, holding a number of international schools and civil institutions among low residential blocks.

   Al Wajbah

   One of the oldest forts in Qatar, fifteen kilometres west of Doha, and the site of the battle of 1893 in which Qatari forces under Sheikh Jassim defeated an Ottoman column. That victory is the founding event of the modern state, and the fort is a national monument.

   Katara Mosque

   A mosque in the Katara cultural village faced entirely in gold mosaic tile, with a minaret wound in a spiral after the ninth-century one at Samarra in Iraq. It was designed by the Turkish architect Zainab Fadil Oglu and is known locally as the gold mosque.
