   Kuwait Towers

   Three tapering concrete towers on a promontory in Kuwait City, opened in February 1977, the tallest at a hundred and eighty-seven metres with a restaurant and a water tank in its spheres. They were shot up in the 1990 invasion and restored afterwards.

   Grand Mosque

   The largest mosque in Kuwait, opened in 1986, with a prayer hall seventy-two metres square under a dome of twenty-six metres and teak doors. It holds around ten thousand men and nearly a thousand women, and tours are given to non-Muslims on weekdays.

   Kuwait National Museum

   The national museum, opened in 1983 to a design by Michel Ecochard as five buildings around a courtyard. Iraqi troops looted and burned it in 1991 and carried the Al-Sabah collection to Baghdad; most of it came back, but the museum has never fully recovered.

   Imam Hussein Mosque

   The largest Shia mosque in Kuwait, built in 1986 in the Midan Hawalli district, with room for several thousand men and a separate hall for women.

   Holy Family Cathedral, Kuwait

   The Catholic co-cathedral of Kuwait City, in the Qibla district on land granted by the ruling family. It serves a congregation of Indian, Filipino and Arab Catholics numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and Sunday masses run in half a dozen languages.

   Kuwait Entertainment City

   An amusement park opened on the western edge of Kuwait City in 1984, unusual in the Gulf for its inverted roller coaster and narrow-gauge railway. It has since closed and the site is being redeveloped.

   Imam Jaʿfar as-Ṣādiq Mosque

   The principal Shia mosque of Kuwait City, in the Sawaber quarter and tied to the Ihqaqi religious authority. Beside the prayer hall it runs a hawza committee teaching doctrine and religious law; it is named for Jafar al-Sadiq, sixth of the imams, who died in 765.

   Sadu House

   A museum and workshop near the national museum devoted to sadu, the geometric weaving Bedouin women make from sheep and camel wool. It trains weavers as well as showing the work.
