   Bur Dubai

   The older, western side of Dubai Creek, holding the Al Fahidi quarter of wind-tower houses, the textile souk and the abra jetties. The wooden ferries have crossed to Deira for a century and still charge a dirham, which makes them the cheapest thing in Dubai by a wide margin.

   Dubai Museum

   The city museum, housed in Al Fahidi Fort, which was built in 1787 to guard the creek and is the oldest building in Dubai. The displays reconstruct the pearl-diving and date-trading town that existed until the 1960s, which almost nothing else in the city now records.

   Deira

   District on the north bank of Dubai Creek, with the gold and spice souks. Wooden dhows still load here for Iran and India, as they have for over a century.

   Dubai Creek Tower

   A Calatrava-designed observation tower on the creek, begun in 2016 and intended to overtake the Burj Khalifa, with a form derived from a lily stem and the minaret. Work stopped in 2020 and the foundations have been sitting in the lagoon since.

   Museum of the Future

   A steel torus opened in February 2022 on Sheikh Zayed Road, wrapped in Arabic calligraphy that is also its windows — the text is three sayings of the ruler of Dubai. The building has no internal columns, and its seven floors are staged as an immersive guess at the year 2071.

   Jumeirah Mosque

   Mosque in Dubai completed in 1979 in the Fatimid style, with two minarets and a dome. It is the only one in the city open to non-Muslims, on a guided tour.

   Grand Mosque

   The Friday mosque of Bur Dubai, between the textile souk and the old fort, with the tallest minaret in the city at about seventy metres. The present building went up in 1998, replacing a 1960 mosque that had itself replaced one of 1900 on the same ground.

   Al Bastakiya

   Old quarter of Dubai on the south bank of the creek, with coral-stone houses and wind towers. Slated for demolition in 1989, it was saved after a British architect intervened.

   Ras Al Khor

   A wetland reserve at the head of Dubai Creek, protected under the Ramsar convention and surrounded now by motorways and towers. Hides on the mudflats put you within a few metres of greater flamingos, which winter here in the low thousands and are fed by the municipality.

    Sharjah National Park

    The largest park in Sharjah at some sixty-three hectares, with playgrounds, football and handball pitches and long shaded walks. It functions as the emirate's back garden on winter weekends, when families arrive with cooking gear.

   Al Qusais

   A residential and industrial district of Deira on the Sharjah boundary, and the site of the oldest excavated settlement in Dubai — Iron Age and Bronze Age tombs, dating back some four thousand years, found under what is now a suburb.

   St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubai

   One of only two Catholic churches in Dubai, and a parish of the Vicariate of Southern Arabia. Masses run in a dozen languages through the weekend for a congregation drawn largely from the Philippines and South India; the compound is crowded from dawn on Fridays.

   Al Satwa

   A dense low-rise quarter between Bur Dubai and Jumeirah, and one of the few parts of the city that never got redeveloped. Tailors, textile shops and Filipino and Indian canteens fill the ground floors, and rents are among the last affordable ones in Dubai.

   Al Karama

   One of the older residential quarters of Dubai, on the west bank of the creek and laid out in a tight grid of low blocks. Barely two square kilometres, it is where the city eats and shops cheaply, especially South Indian and Filipino.

   Deira Clocktower

   A clock tower on a roundabout in Deira, built in 1965 to mark the opening of the first bridge across the creek and, for a while, the tallest thing in the city. It survived the demolition of everything around it.

   Za'abeel

   District in the heart of Dubai holding the ruling family's palace and a park along the creek. The Museum of the Future, a torus inscribed with Arabic calligraphy, opened here in 2022.

   Mushrif Park

   A family park sixteen kilometres east of central Dubai near Al Khawaneej, laid out by Dubai Municipality in 1982 and greatly enlarged in 1989. Model houses from thirteen countries stand among the ghaf trees, which is what most people remember of it.

   Dubai Festival City

   A waterfront development on the eastern bank of the creek, with a mall of some four hundred shops, a marina, a golf course and a promenade of more than three kilometres. Fountain shows run against the water each evening.

   King Faisal Mosque, Sharjah

   A mosque in Sharjah named after King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who paid for it. It stands in the emirate next door to Dubai, a short drive up the coast, and is one of the largest in the northern emirates.

    Dubai Spice Souk

    A covered lane of shops in Deira beside the Gold Souk, selling frankincense from Oman, saffron, dried hibiscus, cardamom and rose petals out of open sacks. It is the last working fragment of the entrepôt trade the city was built on.
