   King Fahd's Fountain

   The tallest fountain in the world, throwing Red Sea water more than two hundred and sixty metres above the corniche at Jeddah. It was given to the city by King Fahd and has run since the mid-1980s.

   Tomb of Eve

   A walled cemetery in Jeddah that some Muslims hold to contain the grave of Eve — the city's name is popularly derived from the Arabic for grandmother. The Saudi authorities walled the tomb in 1928 and sealed it with concrete in 1975 to stop people praying at it.

   King Saud Mosque

   The largest mosque in Jeddah, finished in 1987 to a design by Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, built in load-bearing brick in a deliberate return to traditional construction. It won an Aga Khan Award and is the most admired modern mosque in the kingdom.

   Al-Rahmah Mosque

   A mosque of 1985 built on stilts over the Red Sea on the corniche, so that at high tide it appears to float. It has a central dome, fifty-two smaller ones and windows of turquoise glass, and it is the building most photographed in the city.

   Jeddah Regional Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography

   The Khuzam Palace, built for King Abdulaziz between 1928 and 1932, where he received the negotiators who signed away the first oil concession in 1933. It now holds the regional museum of archaeology and ethnography.

   Nasseef House

   A coral-stone merchant's house in Al-Balad, built between 1872 and 1881 for Omar Nasseef Effendi and marked by the neem tree that was long the only tree in Jeddah. Ibn Saud lodged here after taking the city in 1925; it now serves as a cultural centre.

   The Qishla of Jeddah

   An Ottoman barracks building in Jeddah, its foundation put at 1525, from the period when the Ottomans fortified the Red Sea against the Portuguese. Parts of the structure survive within a military compound.

   Hassan Enany Mosque

   One of the larger mosques of Jeddah, designed by the Egyptian architect Mohamed Raouf Helmy, who worked on a number of Saudi mosques in the later 20th century. Its dome and paired minarets stand over the streets in the middle of the city.

   Jaffali Mosque

   The white mosque on the Jeddah corniche, built in 1985 on piles over the water so that at high tide it appears to float clear of the shore. Its single dome and slim minaret are floodlit at night and draw crowds for the evening prayer.
