   Kingdom Centre

   A tower of three hundred and two metres in Riyadh, opened in 2002 and topped by an inverted arch with a skybridge slung across it. The bridge is open to visitors and gives the best view of the city's sprawl.

   Al Faisaliah Centre

   A tower of two hundred and sixty-seven metres by Norman Foster, finished in 2000 and the first skyscraper in Riyadh. A glass globe near the top holds a restaurant, lit at night above the business district.

   Masmak Fort

   A mud-brick fort in the old centre, taken in January 1902 by the young Abdulaziz and forty men in the raid that began the modern Saudi state. A spearhead thrown in the fight is still lodged in the main door.

   Palace of Yamamah

   The official workplace and residence of the king and the seat of the royal court since 1988, in the northwest of Riyadh. It is closed to the public but is where state visits are received.

   King Abdullah Financial District

   A financial district of some fifty towers in the al-Aqeeq quarter, begun in 2006 and long delayed, now filling up. Its metro station, designed by Zaha Hadid's office, opened with the network in 2024.

   Murabba Palace

   A palace of mud brick built between 1936 and 1938 by King Abdulaziz outside the old city walls, and the first royal building put up beyond them. It is the centrepiece of the historical centre and shows Najdi construction at full scale.

   At-Turaif District

   The mud-brick district of Diriyah that served as the first Saudi capital from 1727 until Ottoman-Egyptian forces razed it in 1818. Birthplace of the House of Saud, its Najdi palaces and mosques joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010.

   Riyadh TV Tower

   A television tower of a hundred and seventy metres in the Al-Wisham district, built between 1975 and 1982 and the tallest structure in Saudi Arabia until the Al Faisaliah went up in 2000. Its observation deck marks the point where the modern city began to rise.

   Deera Square

   The open square beside the Masmak fort and the old governor's palace, the centre of Riyadh before the city spread. Public executions were carried out here, which is where its grim nickname comes from.

    Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque

    The main Friday mosque of Riyadh, founded about 1830 in the reign of the imam whose name it carries and rebuilt in 1992 in a modern Najdi manner. It stands beside the old palace and holds many thousands.

   King Salman Park

   A park being built on the site of Riyadh's old airport, announced in 2019 as part of a plan to plant millions of trees across the city. When finished it is intended to be among the largest urban parks in the world.

   Olaya

   The central business district of Riyadh, where the Kingdom Centre and the Faisaliah tower stand. It runs along Olaya Street, which carries most of the city's shopping and, in the evening, most of its traffic.

   King Abdul Aziz Historical Centre

   A heritage complex opened in 1999 for the centenary of the capture of Riyadh, laid out around the mud-brick Murabba palace. It holds the National Museum, the national library and a park, and is the best half day in the city.

   Al Dakheel Mosque

   A Friday mosque in the ash-Shuhada district of Riyadh, opened in 2004 and built to hold a large congregation from the surrounding residential quarters.

   Al-Qibli Mosque

   A mosque in the Manfuhah district traced back to 1689 and among the oldest in Riyadh, from the years when this was a walled oasis town of mud brick. It has been repaired repeatedly since 1945 and restored again in the 2020s.

   Saqer Aljazirah Aviation Museum

   The Royal Saudi Air Force museum on the East Ring Road, with a Saudia TriStar parked at the gate where drivers can see it. Inside are the aircraft the kingdom has flown since the 1940s, from Spitfires and Dakotas to Lightnings and Tornados.
