Hamilton Island is a resort island in the middle of the Whitsundays with an airstrip on it, so the holiday begins at the terminal. Private cars are not allowed; everyone drives golf buggies.

Whitehaven Beach is half an hour by boat — seven kilometres of silica sand so pure it squeaks and does not hold heat. Helicopters fly out to Heart Reef, a coral formation that grew, unhelpfully, into a perfect shape for photographs.

    Whitehaven Beach

    Seven kilometres of sand on Whitsunday Island that is about ninety-eight per cent pure silica, so fine it squeaks and does not hold heat. At Hill Inlet at the northern end the tide moves the sand into swirling patterns that are the reason for the seaplane flights.

    Molle Islands National Park

    A national park covering several of the Whitsunday islands, including Long Island and South Molle. Eucalypt forest and rainforest gullies come down to white beaches, and the walking tracks are reached only by boat.
