Lord Howe Island allows four hundred visitors at a time and no more, which is why it still looks like the volcanic remnant it is — two peaks, a lagoon and the world's southernmost coral reef.

The whole island is World Heritage. Mount Gower is climbed with a guide in a long day on ropes and roots. Ball's Pyramid, a rock spire five hundred and sixty metres out of the ocean, stands twenty kilometres offshore.

    Ball's Pyramid

    A blade of rock rising five hundred and sixty-two metres out of the ocean twenty kilometres from Lord Howe, the tallest volcanic sea stack in the world. A colony of the Lord Howe stick insect, thought extinct, was found on it in 2001.

    Mount Gower

    The highest point of Lord Howe Island at eight hundred and seventy-five metres, topped by twenty-seven hectares of cloud forest. The climb takes about eight hours and must be done with a guide, using fixed ropes in places.

    Mount Lidgbird

    A peak of seven hundred and seventy-seven metres on Lord Howe Island, separated from Mount Gower by a saddle. Its summit is loose and exposed and is very rarely climbed; the guided ascent on this island goes up Gower instead.
