Nouméa is French in the South Pacific — baguettes, boules and a lagoon that is the largest in the world, listed as World Heritage in 2008.

Renzo Piano's Tjibaou centre, of curved timber ribs, was built to house Kanak culture rather than to display it. Amédée is a lighthouse island an hour out, and the Isle of Pines has a natural pool fed by the tide.

    Nouméa Cathedral

    The Catholic cathedral of Nouméa, built in the 1890s on a rise above the town and partly by convict labour, since New Caledonia was a French penal colony until 1897. Its twin towers are the landmark of the harbour.

    Aquarium des Lagons

    An aquarium on the Anse Vata lagoon opened in 1956, known for the fluorescent corals first shown to the public here. Its tanks follow the reef from mangrove to outer wall, with nautilus and sea snakes among the residents.

    New Caledonia Museum

    The territorial museum in Noumea, holding one of the largest collections of Kanak carving — house posts, door jambs and ceremonial pieces — along with material from across Melanesia. It grew out of a collection begun in the 1860s.

    Église du Vœu de Nouméa

    A church begun in 1893 in fulfilment of a vow made during the Kanak revolt of 1878, when the settlers promised a sanctuary if the town were spared. Its twin towers stand over the Vallee des Colons, and wooden vaulting spans the interior.
