Proserpine is the mainland airport for the Whitsundays, with Airlie Beach twenty minutes away — a marina, a public lagoon to swim in when the stingers are about, and boats leaving for the islands each morning.

Seventy-four islands lie offshore, most of them uninhabited national park. Two-day sailing trips are the standard way to see them, ending at Hill Inlet, where the tide moves white sand through blue water in patterns that change daily.

Whitehaven Beach
Seven kilometres of sand on Whitsunday Island that is about ninety-eight per cent pure silica, so fine it squeaks and does not hold heat. At Hill Inlet at the northern end the tide moves the sand into swirling patterns that are the reason for the seaplane flights.
