Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia and the point everything else connects through — inter-island flights to Bora Bora, and a ferry to Moorea that takes half an hour.

The covered market sells black pearls, vanilla and monoi oil scented with tiare. Tahiti itself is worth a day or two: a black-sand coast, waterfalls inland, and the surf break at Teahupo'o on the peninsula.

    Papeete Tahiti Temple

    A temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Papeete, announced in 1980 and the first in French Polynesia — where the church has one of its highest membership rates anywhere, dating from missions sent in the 1840s.

    Musée de Tahiti et des Îles

    The national museum of French Polynesia, at Puna'auia on Tahiti, covering the natural history of the islands, the great voyaging canoes and the arrival of Europeans. Its collection of Polynesian carving is the finest in the territory.
