Rarotonga is thirty-two kilometres around, which a scooter does in an hour, and holds a lagoon on the outside and jungle mountains in the middle — the cross-island track goes over the top in half a day.

The Cook Islands are self-governing and use New Zealand dollars, and Rarotonga is the hub. Aitutaki and its lagoon are forty-five minutes away by light aircraft and are worth the fare.

    Te Manga

    The highest point on Rarotonga at six hundred and fifty-two metres, climbed by a steep track through jungle from the inland road. The cross-island walk that most visitors do goes over a lower saddle to the west of it.

    National Stadium

    The national stadium at Avarua, built in 1984 and holding about five thousand — a large share of the island's population. Rugby league and union both use it, and the Cook Islands' international matches are played here.

    St. Joseph's Cathedral, Avarua

    The cathedral of the Rarotonga diocese, dedicated in 1994 and serving the Cook Islands and Niue. The mission began as an apostolic prefecture in 1922 and was raised to a diocese in 1966; stained glass inside runs through scenes of the Bible.
