Palau made its waters a shark sanctuary in 2009, the first country to do so, and stamps a conservation pledge into arriving passports. The Rock Islands are World Heritage.

Blue Corner is among the most famous dives anywhere, hooked onto a reef edge in current while sharks pass. A marine lake holds golden jellyfish that lost their sting, and the Milky Way is a lagoon of white mud people coat themselves in.

    Belau National Museum

    The oldest continuously running museum in Micronesia, founded in 1955, with a traditional bai — a men's meeting house with a painted gable — rebuilt in front of it. The collections cover Palauan navigation, money beads and the German and Japanese administrations.

    Nan'yō Shrine

    The chief Shinto shrine of Japan's South Seas Mandate, built on Koror in 1940 and dedicated to Amaterasu. It was dismantled after 1945; the stone steps, foundations and a torii remain in the forest.

    Etpison Museum

    A private museum opened in 1999 in a building the Etpisons designed themselves, holding storyboards, Palauan money beads, war material and photographs of the islands before the tourism. It is better organised than the national museum.
