Tonga is the only Pacific nation never to have been colonised and is still a kingdom, with a small white wooden palace on the waterfront at Nuku'alofa.

It is also one of the few places on earth where swimming with humpback whales is legal, between July and October, under licensed guides. The blowholes on the south coast throw water in a line for several kilometres. Nothing at all opens on Sunday.

    Royal Palace of Nukuʻalofa

    A white timber palace of 1867 on the waterfront, prefabricated in New Zealand and shipped in, and still the residence of the king of Tonga. It is closed to visitors but stands in the open, and the Norfolk pines around it are as old as the building.

    Ha'amonga 'a Maui

    A stone trilithon on Tongatapu, two coral pillars of some forty tonnes carrying a lintel, raised in the thirteenth century. Its name means the burden of Maui, and alignments in the lintel have been read as marking the solstices.

    Church of Tonga

    A Tongan Protestant denomination formed in 1929 by those who refused the merger of the Wesleyan mission and the Free Church five years earlier. Tonga's constitution makes Sunday sacred in law, and nothing at all opens on it.
