Karpathos lies between Crete and Rhodes and was too far from either to be modernised early. In Olymbos, on a ridge in the north, older women still wear the embroidered dress every day.

Apella, reached by a stair down a pine slope, appears on most lists of Greece's best beaches. The wind that makes the south a windsurfing centre also keeps July bearable. May, June and September are calmest.

    HMS Panther

    A P-class destroyer commissioned in December 1941 that fought from Madagascar to Sicily before joining the Dodecanese campaign. German dive bombers sank her off Karpathos on 9 October 1943, and the wreck lies in deep water off the island.

    An ancient city on Karpathos in Greece which served as the harbour of the island. Its site lies near present-day Pigadia, the main town.

    Arcesseia

    An ancient city on Karpathos in Greece. Its name survives only in the tribute lists of the Delian League, and Ludwig Ross placed its site at present-day Arkasa on the headland in the middle of the western coast of the southern part of the island.

    Archaeological museum of Karpathos

    The archaeological museum of Karpathos, open since 2005 in a wing of a listed building put up during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese between 1926 and 1936. Finds from across the island fill its rooms.
