   Butrint

   A Greek city, then Roman colony, then Byzantine bishopric and Venetian outpost on a peninsula in southern Albania, abandoned to malaria and rediscovered in the 1920s. Its theatre, baptistery mosaic and walls stand in woodland above a lagoon, and it is World Heritage.

   Butrint National Park

   A national park of lagoon, marsh and forest around the ancient city, eighteen kilometres south of Sarandë. It is a Ramsar wetland and one of the best bird sites in the Balkans, and the boat across the channel is pulled by cable.

   Achilleion

   A palace built on Corfu in the 1890s for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who was obsessed with Achilles and had him sculpted dying in the garden. Kaiser Wilhelm II bought it after her murder and replaced the statue with a triumphant one.

   Mon Repos

   A villa of 1828 built for a British high commissioner and later a Greek royal summer house. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born in it in 1921 and taken out of Greece the following year in a warship, in an orange box.

   Temple of Artemis

   A Doric temple of about 580 BC, and the earliest known to have carried a fully sculpted stone pediment — the Gorgon from it, three metres across, is in the museum. Only the foundations remain on site, in a field behind a convent.

   Vivari Fortress

   A castle at the western end of the Vivari channel near Butrint, rebuilt in 1819 with three towers by Ali Pasha of Tepelena, who ruled much of this coast almost independently of the sultan until Constantinople had him killed in 1822.

   Old Fortress of Corfu

   A Venetian fortress on the twin-peaked promontory that gave Corfu its name, holding the old town until the population moved west. Its walls held off three Ottoman sieges, which is why the Ionian islands were never conquered.

   Cathedral of Saint James and Saint Christopher

   Catholic cathedral of Corfu, built in 1632 when the island was Venetian. It serves the Latin community and stands on a small square in the old town.

   Corfu New Fortress

   A Venetian fortress on St Mark's hill, begun in 1576 to Ferrante Vitelli's design and extended over two centuries. Its tunnels and casemates can be walked, and the roof looks down on the old port.

   Kassiopi Castle

   A castle above the fishing village of Kassiopi on the northeastern coast of Corfu in Greece. With Gardiki to the south and Angelokastro to the northwest it is one of the three Byzantine castles that held the island before Venetian rule.

   Gardiki Castle, Corfu

   A thirteenth-century Byzantine castle on the southwest coast, built by the despot of Epirus, with eight towers on an octagonal plan. It is the only medieval fortress left in the south of the island and stands in olive groves.

   Spianada

   Square in Corfu town, laid out by the French after 1807 by clearing the ground before the fortress. It is the largest square in Greece, and cricket has been played on it since British rule.

   Kardaki Temple

   A Doric temple of about 500 BC on the Analipsi hill, unusual in having no frieze — a feature that connects it to the temples of Sicily rather than mainland Greece. It was found in 1822 when part of the hill slid away.

   Temple of Hera, Mon Repos

   A temple of about 610 BC in the grounds of the Mon Repos estate at Palaiopolis in Corfu. Its roof was dressed in large painted terracottas — lions, gorgons and daedalic maidens — which makes it the most ambitious roof of the archaic period.

   Archaeological museum of Corfu

   A museum built between 1962 and 1965 specifically to house the Gorgon pediment from the temple of Artemis — a snarling figure with snakes for a belt, from about 580 BC, and one of the oldest large sculptures in Greek art.

   Tomb of Menecrates

   An archaic funerary monument of about 600 BC in Corfu in Greece. It was found in 1843 on the Garitsa hill during the demolition of Venetian fortifications, together with a stone lion which is among the earliest funerary lions known.

    Maitland Monument

    A neoclassical rotunda at the end of the Spianada in Corfu in Greece. It was raised in 1821 to Thomas Maitland, the first Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands.
