   Asclepeion of Kos

   The healing sanctuary of Kos, laid out on three terraces above the town, where medicine was practised as a temple cult and as observation at the same time. Hippocratic teaching came out of this island; patients slept in the porticoes and the priests read their dreams.

   Defterdar Kos Mosque

   A mosque on Kos in the South Aegean in Greece. It was built under the Ottomans in the eighteenth century and is one of two of the five Ottoman mosques on the island still used for worship.

   Neratzia

   The Castle of the Knights at the mouth of Kos harbour, built by the Knights of St John from the 14th century and given its double ring of walls in the 1490s. Much of its stone was quarried from the ancient city and the Asklepieion, and carved blocks still show in the ramparts.

   Archaeological Museum of Kos

   A museum on Eleftherias Square in a building the Italians raised in 1935, arranged around a Roman mosaic showing Hippocrates receiving Asclepius. Hellenistic and Roman sculpture gathered from across the island fills the rooms about it.

   Gazi Hassan Pasha Mosque

   An Ottoman mosque on Kos in the South Aegean in Greece. It was completed about 1777 or 1786, stands beside the tree traditionally called the plane of Hippocrates, and is no longer used for worship.

   Bab Gedid Mosque

   An Ottoman mosque that stood on Kos in Greece. It was also called Eski Cami, the old mosque; the earthquake of 1933 badly damaged it and it was demolished in 1935, leaving only its octagonal stone minaret.

   Palaio Pyli

   A Byzantine castle on a crag in the middle of Kos, guarding the abandoned village of Old Pyli below it. Chapels with faded frescoes stand within the walls, where islanders sheltered from raiders into the 19th century.

   Antimachia Castle

   A castle of the Knights of St John on the ridge above Antimachia, its long curtain wall enclosing a whole hillside rather than a keep. The arms of Grand Master d'Aubusson stand over the gate, and two whitewashed churches survive inside.

   HMS Hurworth

   A Type II Hunt-class escort destroyer of the Royal Navy during the Second World War. She spent most of her service in the Mediterranean and was sunk by a mine in the Aegean in 1943.

    Ancient agora of Kos

    The market place of the ancient city, laid bare after the earthquake of 1933 brought down the quarter above it. Columns of the stoa, the foundations of a temple of Aphrodite and stretches of Hellenistic street now lie open between the harbour and the old town.
