   Navagio

   An open bay on the coast of Zakynthos called Shipwreck Beach for the vessel stranded on its sand. It is counted among the most photographed beaches in the world, and is reached only by boat.

   National Marine Park of Zakynthos

   A marine park founded in 1999 in Laganas bay to protect the loggerhead turtles that nest on its beaches — the largest nesting population in the Mediterranean. Boat speed and beach access are restricted in the season, which the tourism industry has fought for decades.

   HMS Perseus

   A Parthian-class submarine of the Royal Navy built in 1929 and lost in 1941 during the Second World War. The class was the first to carry the Mark VIII torpedo.

   MV Panagiotis

   A wreck lying on the white sand of a cove on the northwestern coast of Zakynthos in Greece. She was built in Scotland in 1937 as the St Bedan and ran aground in 1980; Navagio, the shipwreck beach, now draws thousands of visitors a year.

   Solomos Museum

   A museum on Saint Mark's Square in Zakynthos, established in 1959 in honour of the poets Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos. Solomos wrote the verses that became the Greek national anthem, and both men are buried in the mausoleum below.

   Saint Dionysios metropolitan cathedral

   The church of the island's patron saint, built between 1925 and 1948 with a bell tower modelled on San Marco in Venice. It holds the relics of St Dionysios, and its concrete frame carried it through the earthquake of 1953 that flattened the rest of the town.

   Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos

   A museum opened after the earthquake of 1953 to hold the icons, screens and wall paintings salvaged from the churches the quake brought down. Its rooms follow the Ionian school, where Cretan icon painting met Venetian art, and a model shows the town before the disaster.
