   Melissani Cave

   A cave whose roof collapsed, leaving a brackish lake open to the sky. Around midday the sun drops straight through the hole and the water turns luminous blue; boatmen row visitors round the two chambers. Mycenaean offerings to Pan were found on the islet inside.

   A crescent of white pebble between two mountains on the northwest coast, where the water reads in bands from turquoise to indigo because the bottom shelves so sharply. The road down is a series of hairpins, and the viewpoint above it is where the photograph is taken.

   Fortress St. George

   The fortified town that served as capital of Cephalonia from the Middle Ages until the 18th century, on a hill above Peratata. Byzantine in origin and rebuilt by the Venetians in the 16th century, its walls still ring streets that earthquakes emptied.
