   Milos

   A volcanic island of the Cyclades whose rock comes in white, ochre and rust, and whose obsidian was traded across the Aegean in the Neolithic. The Venus de Milo was dug up by a farmer here in 1820 and is now in Paris; the island keeps asking for it back.

   Kimolos

   A small island off the northeast of Milos, reached by a short ferry, with about nine hundred residents and no development to speak of. Its chalk cliffs at Skiadi have been eroded into a mushroom of rock, and the beaches are reached on foot or by boat.

   Phylakopi

   A Bronze Age settlement on the north coast of Melos in Greece. It was occupied continuously from the middle of the third millennium BC to the twelfth century BC, which has made it the reference site for Aegean Bronze Age chronology.

   Sarakiniko Beach

   A bay on the north shore of Milos where the wind has worn the white volcanic rock smooth and bare, so that the whole inlet looks lunar. Swimmers jump from the ledges and a small wreck lies at the far end.

   Catacombs of Milos

   Christian catacombs of the first to fifth centuries near Tripiti on Milos in Greece. The district takes its name, meaning the pierced place, from the many chambers cut into the volcanic rock, which in antiquity served as family burial vaults.
