Amritsar grew around the sacred tank that Guru Ram Das had dug in 1577. The temple standing in it was clad in gold by Ranjit Singh in the 1830s and is open to anyone with a covered head.

Its kitchen feeds around a hundred thousand people a day, free, on donated labour. Jallianwala Bagh, where troops fired on a crowd in April 1919, is next door. The Wagah border ceremony is at sunset, half an hour away.

Gurdwara Baba Atal
A gurdwara of nine storeys and about forty metres near the Golden Temple, one floor for each year in the life of the boy it commemorates — a son of the sixth Guru. It is the tallest gurdwara anywhere.

Gobindgarh Fort
A fort in the middle of Amritsar built under Ranjit Singh in the early nineteenth century and held by the army until recently. It opened to the public in 2017 with a museum and a nightly show in the courtyard.

Partition Museum
Housed in Amritsar's town hall, once a British headquarters and jail, the museum gathers oral histories, documents and belongings from the 1947 Partition of British India. Opened on 25 August 2017, it also covers the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the anti-colonial movement.

Ram Teerath
A temple complex and historic site at Amritsar associated with the sage Valmiki. A gilded figure of Valmiki eight feet high and weighing eight hundred kilograms was installed in the sanctum on 1 December 2016, and the name was changed from Ram Tirath the same year.
